2010 Sep 17
Effective immediately, the City of Newport News is instituting a city-wide ban on burning. This includes recreational fires, and fires in established fire pits at approved campgrounds or private property. The use of gas and propane self-contained stoves and barbecues will continue to be allowed.
Officials evaluate the risk of fire for residents based on the Cumulative Severity Index. This number accurately describes the amount of moisture that is missing; a rating of 0 defines a point of no moisture deficiency and 800 defines the maximum moisture deficiency possible.
The City of Newport News Cumulative Severity Index is currently above 660. As a point of reference, a normal Cumulative Severity Index for our area would be about 100. Other factors, such as wind, temperature, relative humidity and atmospheric stability also play a major role in determining the actual fire danger.
City Fire Officials will continuously monitor weather conditions and re-evaluate the fire risk once the City receives rain.
Violations are considered a Class 3 misdemeanor with fines up to $500 per offense.
Any questions should be directed to the Fire Marshall’s Office at 757-247-8873.
