Due to recent fires in Newport News and surrounding communities, the Newport News Fire Department is asking residents to be cautious when discarding smoking materials and to be reminded that open burning is prohibited in Newport News. “Especially with windy, dry conditions, it is imperative that residents do not dispose of cigarette butts and other smoking materials in mulch beds, flower pots, and on wooden decking”, states Assistant Fire Marshal John Marr. “Extensive damage to property and loss of life can occur as the result of smoking materials igniting the wood particles in a flower pot, in a garden bed, or blown onto someone’s wooden deck," he warns.

It is against the law to open burn in Newport News. It is easy for a fire to get out of control; especially in windy conditions. If you see someone open burning, please call the non-emergency number at (757) 247-2500 to report the violation.

Homeowners in the City of Newport News can call the Newport News Fire Department’s Smoke Alarm Hotline at (757) 926-8009 if they need a smoke alarm. For more information about smoke alarms and other fire safety topics, visit the Newport News Fire Department’s website at www.nngov.com/fire
