Boy Scout Government Day
2010 Feb 08
In recognition of the Boy Scouts of America’s 100th anniversary, Mayor Joe S. Frank proclaimed February 1st Boy Scout Government Day in the City of Newport News, but due to the snow storm it was rescheduled for February 9th. The Colonial Virginia Council of Boy Scouts and the City of Newport News have partnered to provide an educational program that will give an opportunity for boy scouts to tour city facilities, interact with city officials and gain firsthand knowledge about local government. It also provides city staff with the opportunity to foster interest in public service careers, as well as promote active citizenship among the city’s youth.
Boy Scout Government Day will be held on Tuesday, February 9, and begins at 8:00 a.m. in the City Council Chambers located at 2400 Washington Avenue and concludes at 3:00 p.m. Following a discussion on city operations and services, the Scouts will shadow fire and police department personnel. Lunch for the participating scouts will be provided by the Warwick Ruritan Club, a local community service organization located in Newport News.
