2010 Mar 11

The Newport News Police Department has been contacted by a number of citizens who have received telephone calls with a recorded message stating that their ATM card has been compromised. The message states that the call is from one of several local banks and the person should press a given number for assistance in rectifying the problem. The calls seem to be targeting the elderly population, but could be targeting anyone.

If anyone has received this type of call and responded to the instructions they should contact their bank. If anyone receives such a call, they should hang up and notify their bank. Most, if not all, banks offer the opportunity to report suspected fraud through their websites.

The banks that are aware of this scam are working with authorities in an effort to determine who is responsible.
