2009 Oct 05The Virginia Section of the American Water Works Association (VA AWWA) presented Newport News Waterworks with the 2009 Employer Support Recognition Award. The award recognizes employers that support their employees' growth and development process through continuing education, involvement in the American Water Works Association and Virginia Section AWWA activities, and participation in VA AWWA committees.
“Waterworks recognizes the diverse talent needed to efficiently and effectively run a water utility. We run the spectrum from certified public accountants to professional engineers, from chemists to information technology analysts, from hydrogeologists to licensed treatment plant operators. It is in our best interest and most importantly, the interest of our customers, that we maintain a highly motivated and highly trained workforce. It is for that reason that we encourage and support employee training and development,” says Brian L. Ramaley, Waterworks Director.
Utilizing continuing education programs through the City’s Human Resources Department, Waterworks’ own Human Resources Branch, the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and the American Water Works Association, employees develop leadership skills and hone their individual skill set. In light of the economic downturn, employees are participating more through webinars and local meetings.
“While the award recognizes the support we gave our employees, I am very proud of the employees for stepping up and accepting the challenge to improve and grow in their jobs. We have an exceptional workforce that is talented, reliable and committed and I appreciate what they bring to work every day,” said Ramaley.
VA AWWA is a section of the national American Water Works Association in Denver, Colorado. It is a non-profit, scientific and educational society dedicated to the improvement of drinking water quality and supply.
