Library closings The Newport News Public Library System will be closed Sunday, April 4, for Easter. National Poetry Month: Poet-Tree Children ages 4-11 can submit their original poems to be displayed on the Poet-Tree during the month of April at Main Street Library. National Poetry Month: Up Against the Wall Super Saturday Storytime Parents and children ages 3-11 can join in the fun with lots of stories and fun crafts, 1 p.m., Saturday, April 3 and 17, at Pearl Bailey Library. No registration is required. Paws to Read Children ages 6 to 10 build their confidence by reading out loud to trained therapy dogs at Grissom Library on the first Saturday of each month. The next Paws to Read program will be 3-4 p.m. on Saturday, April 3, at Grissom Library. Parents are required to fill out a permission slip and may accompany their children, as well. No registration is required. Learning on Laptops for Teens: MySpace Apps Games Galore Plus Yu Gi OH! Youth ages 6-18 can play Yu Gi Oh, card and video games, 4:30-7 p.m., Tuesday, April 6, at Pearl Bailey Library. The gaming event will be the first Tuesday of each month, January through June. The new card games Monopoly, Slam and Pictureka are available. Bring your own deck of Yu Gi Oh cards. New members are always welcome. No registration required. An Afternoon Tea with the American Girl Doll Addy Walker National Library Week Newport News Mayor Joe Frank has proclaimed that April 11-17 is Library Week in Newport News. Origami Swami – Stories (un)Folding FKO Program Kick-Off Celebration American Girl author Connie Porter Creating a Herb Container Garden Introduction to the Business Decision database Main Street Library staff will teach participants how to use the Business Decision database. The small-business-oriented marketing database allows users to create maps based on various statistical data, such as extensive consumer household data, market segmentation data, population forecasts and demographic data. Teens ages 13-17 can learn to use MySpace Applications, 4:30-5:45 p.m., Monday, April 5, at Grissom Library. Students will find new ways to interact with friends through the readily available MySpace Applications. Other basic MySpace functions will be discussed as well. Girls ages 7-12 can gather for a very delightful afternoon of tea, lemonade and dainty miniature treats with their Addy Walker American Girl dolls, 2:30-4 p.m., Wednesday, April 7, at Pearl Bailey Library. Girls will also make and take a "proper" hat for tea. Two mini Addy American Girl dolls will be given away free. Megan Hicks, a national storyteller, will enchant audiences of all ages with stories and origami on Saturday, April 10, to mark the beginning of National Library Week. The event is 11 a.m. at Main Street Library, 1 p.m. at Pearl Bailey Library and 3 p.m. at Grissom Library. Hicks works with older children to create origami shapes from paper, and younger children may participate with the help of an adult. No registration required.
Everyone is invited to celebrate the fun-filled kick-off of the Pearl Bailey Library’s For Kids Only (FKO) program, 4:30-6:30 p.m., Thursday, April 15, at Pearl Bailey Library. The celebration is sponsored by the Warwick Rotary Club, the District 7600 Rotary Club and the Friends of the Newport News Public Library. Refreshments will be provided. No registration is required.
Connie Porter, author of the Addy Walker books in the American Girls historical fiction series, will present an author talk and book signing, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Saturday, April 17, at Pearl Bailey Library. The Addy books are about a courageous 9-year-old girl determined to be free in 1864, during the Civil War. An Addy American Girl doll and bookmarks will be given away free, and Barnes & Noble Booksellers will be present to sell American Girl books and other materials. Porter also has written two adult novels, “All-Bright Court” and “Imani All Mine.” “All-Bright Court” was selected by the American Library Association as one of the Best Books of 1991. She lives in Pittsburgh, Penn. No registration is required.
Anita Smith, a Master Gardener with the Newport News Virginia Cooperative Extension, will demonstrate the techniques and procedures for creating a container herb garden, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Saturday, April 17, at Grissom Library. The two sample containers she creates will be given away as door prizes after the class.
