Libraries offer help with new federal youth employment program

A new federal program will provide employment for youths through the summer. The Newport News Public Library System is offering assistance to youths in Newport News interested in finding out more and applying for the program.
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. 2009 May 13A new federal program will provide employment for youths through the summer. The Newport News Public Library System is offering assistance to youths in Newport News interested in finding out more and applying for the program.
An information session is 4-6 p.m., Thursday, May 14, at Main Street Library.
Library staff provide assistance in applying for the program 3-5 p.m., Mondays at Pearl Bailey Library; 3-5 p.m., Tuesdays at Main Street Library, and 3-5 p.m. Wednesdays at Grissom Library.
The Summer Youth Employment Program will place eligible youth ages 16-24 years old in paid summer work experience opportunities.
The goals of the Summer Youth Employment Program are to place youth in jobs so that they earn a paycheck, develop work readiness skills, learn about the world of work and develop effective work habits and behaviors.
The program is administered by The Greater Peninsula Workforce Investment Board and funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
