Teens decorated cupcakes, made smoothies and won prizes in October as the Newport News Public Library System celebrated Teen Read Week, Oct. 16-22. And Halloween at the Libraries brought trick-or-treating, ghost hunting, storytimes, movies, scavenger hunts and more.

For Teen Cupcake Challenge Part Deux on Oct. 22 at Main Street Library, teens ages 12 -17 were challenged to decorate three cupcakes based on themes that were open to their own interpretation. Plenty of decorating materials were provided, and teens could work individually or in teams.

Elizabeth Parker and Lauren Vaughan won a $10 gift certificate and fondant cutters in the spooky/fantasy category. Tierra Hunter also won a $10 gift certificate and fondant cutters in the welcome to the jungle challenge, and she won the book, “What’s New Cupcake?” by Karen Tack and Alan Richardson for the freestyle theme.

More than 70 children and families came to Virgil I. Grissom Library on Oct. 25 for the Halloween Family Fun Night, most dressed in costumes. Storytime included the books “The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything” and “By The Light of the Halloween Moon.”

Community Outreach Officer Valerie Young from the Newport News Police Department then shared trick-or-treating safety tips and passed out treat bags with activity sheets, coupons, a pencil, and other goodies for each child. Children then decorated their own trick-or-treat bags and went to the Library’s service desks to receive candy and other treats.

Programs were made possible by the Friends of the Newport News Public Library.
