At 7:00 P.M. tonight, Wednesday, December 8, 2010, thirteen new police officers will be joined by their families, friends and other members of the Department as they celebrate their graduation from the Newport News Police Training Academy. The ceremony will take place at the Ferguson Center for the Arts located on the campus of Christopher Newport University.

The keynote speaker for this evening’s event will be The Honorable David F. Pugh, Newport News Circuit Court Judge.

The ceremony will include the Department’s Honor Guard and the Newport News Police Pipe and Drum Band as well as remarks from Mayor McKinley L. Price, Police Chief James D. Fox and class representative Amanda L. Billups. The oath of office will be administered by The Honorable James H. Harvell, III, Retired General District Court Judge.

After being sworn in, each new officer will be joined on stage by a person of their choice who will pin their new badge to the uniform.

The new officers will be assigned to field training officers for additional training before being released to independent patrol. Following their field training they will each be assigned to one of the Department’s three precincts.

This ceremony culminates nearly six months of extremely rigorous training both in the classroom and in practical scenarios.
