Duo C. Shells brings music and laughter to Grissom
The meeting room at Grissom Library was filled with the sounds of singing, clapping, and jumping of 56 children on July 26 as the music of C. Shells, a traveling duo, washed over the audience in a frenzy of fun and delight. The free program was part of the Newport News Public Library System’s Summer Reading Program.

The meeting room at Grissom Library was filled with the sounds of singing, clapping, and jumping of 56 children on July 26 as the music of C. Cindy Kays and Shelly Craig Potter form the group C. Shells, a locally based musical duo that performed well-known scores, such as “Under the Sea,” Irish folk songs such as “Rattlin’ Bog” and originally written songs such as “Blue Crab Blues.” They performed with a banjo, guitars, and a shiny, silver resonator guitar known as a Dobro.
Children were given the opportunity to participate by playing a variety of percussion instruments from around the world, including
maracas and a Peruvian instrument made from llama toenails.
The performers incorporated the Library System’s “Make a Splash - Read” theme, supporting the Summer Reading Program while providing entertainment. For more information about the duo, or to purchase their CD, visit www.cshellsmusic.com. The Summer Reading Program is made possible by funding from the Friend of the Newport News Public Library.
