Harry Potter fans can look forward to a magical fall in Newport News. Virgil I. Grissom Library will host a free special exhibit and programs about the popular teenage wizard in September and October 2010.
A traveling exhibit, “Harry Potter's World: Renaissance, Science, Magic, and Medicine,” will be on display in the Grissom Library Sept. 5-Oct. 16, 2010. The exhibit explores the world of Harry Potter and its roots in Renaissance magic, science, and medicine.
In 1997, British author J.K. Rowling introduced the world to Harry Potter and a literary phenomenon was born. Although a fantasy story, the magic in the Harry Potter books is partially based on Renaissance traditions that played an important role in the development of Western science and medicine.
The six-banner traveling exhibition was created to explore the link between Harry Potter and the history of science using materials from the National Library of Medicine. More information about the exhibit is available at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/exhibition/harrypottersworld/index.html
Along with the exhibit, Grissom Library will be hosting special programs during the entire six weeks the exhibit will be on display. The special events begin with a kickoff program on Saturday, Sept. 11, featuring costumes, food, crafts, prizes and more. Harry Potter movies will be shown during a movie “marathon.” Book and film discussions are planned, as well as a trivia contest.
All of the programs are free and open to the public.
Part of the Newport News Public Library System, Grissom Library is located at 366 DeShazor Drive, Newport News, VA 23608. Details and more information will be available closer to the event at www.nngov.com/library or by calling Grissom Library at 757-369-3190.
