On Saturday, October 9, 2010 from 9:00 A.M. – 3:00 P.M. the Newport News Police Department, in conjunction with the Virginia State Police Help Eliminate Auto Theft (H.E.A.T.) program, will host a VIN Etching event at Patrick Henry Mall. During this event the federally assigned number known as a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) will be permanently etched on the vehicle’s windows. In addition to cars and trucks, for the first time on the Peninsula, this event will also include motorcycles.
In addition to the fact that disposing of a vehicle whose windows have been VIN etched takes time, trouble and money, all in short supply for thieves, VIN etching obliterates any potential profit professional thieves might have gleaned from the lucrative practice of selling windows and windshields for parts via chop shops.
The VIN Etching service takes only a few minutes to perform and is provided at no cost.
The H.E.A.T. program is a cooperative effort of the Virginia Department of State Police, Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, and local law enforcement agencies across the Commonwealth, in an effort to reduce auto theft. Additional information can be found at the H.E.A.T. website, www.heatreward.com.
