Newport News Public Library System to Host Free Programs in June: Kickoff Summer Reading Program

Youth ages 6-18 can play Yu Gi Oh, card and video games, 4:30-7 p.m., Tuesday, June 1, at Pearl Bailey Library. New games are available. Bring your own deck of Yu Gi Oh cards. New members are always welcome. No registration required.
Expert Tips to Save Time & Money
Two leading authors share their tips and strategies for saving money and getting the most for less, 1-4:30 p.m., Saturday, June 5, at Main Street Library. Author Jeff Yeager, the NBC “Today” Show’s “Ultimate Cheapskate,” talks about his new book, “The Cheapskate Next Door: The Surprising Secrets of Americans Living Happily below Their Means,” answers audience questions and takes book orders, 1-2:30 p.m. Then Mark Di Vincenzo, author of the new book, “Buy Ketchup in May and Fly at Noon,” will discuss “the best time to buy this, do that and go there,” answer questions and sign books, 3-4:30 p.m. Barnes & Noble Booksellers of Newport News will be on site to sell the book. Part of the Neisser Speaker Series, this program is sponsored by the Library System’s Herbert H. Neisser Fund. No registration required.
Paws to Read
Children ages 6 to 10 build their confidence by reading out loud to trained therapy dogs at Grissom Library on the first Saturday of each month. The next Paws to Read program will be 3-4 p.m. on Saturday, June 5, at Grissom Library. Parents are required to fill out a permission slip and may accompany their children, as well. No registration is required.
Creating Paper Flowers
Crafting instructor Ruthann Grabowski will teach adults how to create paper flowers, 6:30-8 p.m., Monday, June 7, at Grissom Library. All supplies will be provided. Teen Advisory Committee
Teens ages 12-18 can meet to help advise Library staff on ways to improve Library programs and services. The group meets 5-6:30 p.m., the second Wednesday of each month at Pearl Bailey Library. The next meeting is Wednesday, June 9. A Teen Advisory Committee application is required to join, and visitors are welcome. For more information, call Pearl Bailey Library at 757-247-8677.
Men’s Health Forum
Health care professionals, a nutritionist, and a cancer survivor will discuss health issues regarding adult men, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Saturday, June 12, at Pearl Bailey Library. The forum will include a question-and-answer segment, blood pressure screening and information brochures. Light refreshments will be served. No registration required.
Trice Hickman Book Talk
Trice Hickman, author of award-winning books, “Keeping Secrets and Telling Lies” and “Unexpected Interruptions,” will present a free book talk, 10 a.m.-noon, Saturday, June 12, at Grissom Library in Newport News. Introduction to the Foundation Directory Online
Main Street Library staff will teach adults how to use the Foundation Directory Online database, which allows grant-seekers to search for grants and research potential donors. This class will be offered 3-4 p.m., on Tuesday, June 15, in the Business Information Center at Main Street Library. FKO Youth Advisory Committee

Loosely Knit Group
Everyone is welcome to join the Loosely Knit Group, which meets 9:30-11:30 a.m. every Thursday at Grissom Library. Anyone who enjoys knitting, crocheting, or any craft is welcome, and no registration is required.
All Tied Up: Bailey Knit & Stitch Group
Adults are welcome to join the All Tied Up Group, which meets 6:30-8:30 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at Pearl Bailey Library. Participants can socialize with others while learning a new skill or enhance their current skills. Computer classes

Classes are offered on an ongoing basis covering various topics, including computer and Internet basics, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, resume writing and more. Summer Reading Programs
For Adults
Adults, come and “Water Your Mind” during the Newport News Public Library System’s Summer Reading Program for adults. For each library book read Monday, June 21, through Friday, July 31, adults ages 18 and older can enter drawings at Newport News Libraries. The more books read, the more chances to win. Complete the forms and drop them in the Summer
Reading Program box at any Newport News Library, including the Bookmobile, to enter the drawings. Each Library location will draw one winner randomly each Monday from all the entries it has received. In addition, at the end of the program, each Library location will draw one overall winner from entries received at that location. The Library System will also draw three grand prize winners. Winners will be notified by phone. Library employees and their families are not eligible to win. The weekly prize is a water bottle; and the branch prize is a gift card, water bottle and beach towel. Third place grand prize is a Fun in the Garden Gift Pack; second place grand prize is a Day at Ocean Breeze Water Park for a family of four; and the first place grand prize is a one-night stay at Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg for a family of four.
For Children and Teens
Children and teens can “dive into” reading this summer during the Newport News Public Library System’s Summer Reading Program. Children of all ages can read books, win prizes and participate in special programs, Monday, June 21, through Friday, July 31 -- all for free. Sign up anytime between June 21 and July 31 to receive a book log to keep track of reading and earn prizes throughout the program. Children and teens will win prizes based on the number of books they read. Adults reading to children may sign up their preschoolers and earn prizes, too. Special programs and events offer fun and education on the theme of Make a Splash…Read! for children and Make Waves @ Your Library for teens. Activities will be provided at Grissom, Main Street and Pearl Bailey Libraries throughout the program. Activities include songs, crafts, magic, shadow puppets, instruments and storytelling.
