Library patrons now have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a pivotal moment of United States’ history through new Civil War collections available at the Newport News Public Library System.

The Library System received three collections of 17 titles each through the “We the People” award. The Library System is one of 4,000 libraries nationwide to receive the award from the National Endowment for the Humanities in partnership with the American Library Association.

The collections are based on President Lincoln’s idea of “A more perfect Union,” a theme chosen to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Included are works such as “American Creation,” “Chains,” and bonus material including “The Civil War,” a DVD series of films by Ken Burns.

Pearl Bailey, Grissom, and Main Street Libraries each have a collection with all items now available for loan. In addition, the Library System will be providing free programs to highlight the collection through May 2011. Details on those programs will be provided in the future.
