Library reference service soon to be available through instant messaging
Library patrons will soon be able to get reference answers through instant messaging. Beginning June 1, the e-Librarian service of the Newport News Public Library System will enable users to get answers live from reference staff.
NEWPORT NEWS, VA 2010 May 26Library patrons will soon be able to get reference answers through instant messaging. Beginning June 1, the e-Librarian service of the Newport News Public Library System will enable users to get answers live from reference staff.
Patrons can access the service through a link on the Library System’s website at http://www.nngov.com/library/meebome. It is available 6-8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 3-5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, beginning June 1.
Users may ask the same type of informational questions on e-Librarian that they would ask the Library’s reference staff in person or by phone.
The time required to receive an answer will depend on the complexity of the question, and the Library staff’s workload. The service will be monitored live during the hours it is available, and staff can let patrons know an estimated time required to receive an answer to their particular question.
