Newport News residents may apply for a Garage Sale or Yard Sale permit. An application for a Garage Sale or Yard Sale permit may be obtained from the following:

• Police Headquarters, 9710 Jefferson Avenue, 928-4100
• North Precinct, 368 DeShazor Drive, 369-3105
• Central Precinct, 611 Dresden Drive, 591-4978

The application may be filled out and submitted in person or it can be mailed in. There is a $5.00 fee for issuance of the permit.

Before the permit can be issued, the information on the application is verified that you are eligible to obtain a permit by checking a driver's license, electric bill, phone bill or any other document that displays your current address. A permit cannot be issued if one has been issued in the past 45 days and only four (4) permits a year may be issued to an applicant residing at a particular address. Please note: If you live in a multi-family housing complex, you must obtain written permission from the manager or owner. A permit may also be obtained by the resident's designee provided the above criteria are met.

Garage Sale and Yard Sale permits fall under City Code Sec. 37-2. Permit for garage sales; signs advertising such sales. This will be explained and provided to you so you may be in compliance. Once the permit is issued, the Original is kept at the Police Department and the Yellow Copy is given to you.
