| The Criminal Investigations Division (CID) is comprised of two sub-divisions: the Major Crimes Section and the General Investigations Section. Each section is supervised by a lieutenant that reports directly to the Criminal Investigations Division Commander, Captain R. Keith Hartman. |

The Major Crimes Section is comprised of the Robbery, Homicide and Forensic Services Units. The General Investigations Section is comprised of the Fugitive Apprehension, the Special Victims (SVU), the School Resource Officer (SRO), Missing Persons / Runaway and the Economic Crimes Units. Each unit is supervised by a sergeant who reports directly to their section lieutenant. |

The primary mission of the CID is to investigate the complex criminal cases that take place in the City of Newport News. The individual units investigate specific types of crimes as suggested by the unit titles (Robbery investigates robberies, Homicide investigates homicides, rapes and aggravated assaults, Economic Crimes investigates economic crimes, etc).
