The boundaries of the South Precinct encompass the drainage canal just south of Center Avenue southward to the James River, Hampton city line and west to the James River.  The South Precinct has a population of  thirty-five thousand citizens.  There is a mix of single family homes as well as apartment complexes, some subsidized by Newport News Housing and Redevelopment Authority (NNHRA) and  Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

The South District operates 24 hours a day using three shifts to cover this time frame answering citizen's calls for service.

We also have a detective unit which deals solely with property crimes such as burglary, vandalism, stolen vehicles, property damage, and economic crimes. High Impact Patrol (H.I.P.,) one sergeant, and five officers address our more severe or chronic problems. The most serious of crimes (murder, rape and robbery) are investigated by the Major Crimes Unit.

The precinct is supervised by a Captain, three lieutenants, and twelve sergeants. There are approximately seventy police and civilian personnel assigned to the South Precinct.
