Police Recruit Testimonial
I was one of the first recruits for the new academy. I was placed in a new program that let me go to different departments within the Newport News Police Department. Every week, I was meeting new people by the minute. Also, ride-alongs helped show the day to day activity of a police officer. The experience of working with each individual has made a lasting impression on me. Every officer, sergeant, lieutenant, captain, and the Chief have treated me with the up-most respect. I have not yet graduated from the academy yet, I already feel like I am part of the police family.

My application experience with the Newport News Police Department was nothing short of amazing! Everyone in the department welcomed me with a smile and a cordial personality. I felt comfortable the moment I stepped inside the building. Being a college student during the time of my application process, the department was able to work around my schedule, and give me an opportunity to do most of the testing over a two day process. This was wonderful since I was from another state and had to drive 5 plus hours to get to the department. My pre-hire experience with the department has been outstanding! I have enjoyed learning the inner workings of the police department, as well as agencies that work with the department. I am getting the chance to see things that many new and senior officers never see during their entire careers. I only wish that I could have been hired earlier to experience even more aspects! I look forward to the rest of my pre-hire assignments and cannot wait to use my knowledge in the academy.

In my opinion, the Police recruiting team here at Newport News is second to none. Their professionalism and dedication to excellence is refreshing. The Police recruit application process was straight-forward and timely. The recruiting staff is friendly and willing to answer any questions. The “Pre-Hire” experience has been extremely helpful to understanding the various aspects of police work. Working with the various departments inside the police department and with other Newport News city departments has been enlightening. This extra experience and networking will help during and after the
Police Academy.
Police Recruit Helbing
My application process went very smoothly and efficiently. It only took me a couple of months to get hired. Also, since I was attending college I worked as an intern with the Newport News Police. I think the pre-hire program is an excellent way to learn about the department. Not only did I get to work in different units of the department but also was able to attend court cases and do ride alongs with other officers. I was able to watch and learn how things are done in patrol and in the other units such as the School Resource Unit, Marine Patrol, Community Resource Unit, and the Commonwealth Attorney's Office. By having this pre-hire program the department is able to put the newly hired recruits in this program until the academy so we can start gaining knowledge from different officers and the various units that compose the department. This department strives for excellence so I would recommend anyone looking to join Newport News Police to go ahead and turn in an application because there is no other department that works as hard as this one.

The application process for the Newport News Police Department, though tough, was absolutely thorough, fair, and straightforward. I was recruited to the department by an amicable and professional young officer I happened to run into in my apartment complex. The officer spoke so highly the department, the chief, and her fellow officers that I felt compelled to apply to the Newport News Police Department. She made me want to be a part of such a strong and cohesive unit. My personal experience with the department thus far has exceeded my expectations and has given me more knowledge and skills with on-the-job training than I expected learn in the academy, much less before the academy even begins. The pre-hire recruit process has been invaluable in creating a sense of team unity with the other recruits, learning the diversity of the departments, experiencing the departments that work hand-in-hand and with the police department (such and the commonwealth attorney’s office and the codes and compliance department), and creating a system of networking and support that will facilitate our transition from pre-hire recruits to sworn officers, both for ourselves and for the entirety of the department.
Police Recruit Cloutier
My overall pre-hire experience was great. The people I met were all helpful, polite, and welcoming. Upon starting, and moving us around to all the different departments proved insightful and the overall experience exciting. I was thrilled to see things that current officers have not witnessed, as well as meet people that may prove helpful after I complete my training. I encourage all applicants to take advantage of the pre-hire programs that Newport News Police Department has worked so hard to put together.

Processing my application was done in an expedient manner. Contact was maintained throughout the application process and I was kept in the loop as to what was going on at any given point. The pre-hire experience has proved to be invaluable. Observations with the commonwealth attorney's office to the ride-alongs, it was all extremely informative. I had the opportunity to meet several of the NNPD personnel that I would not normally have the chance to meet with, if it wasn't for this pre-hire program. The Commonwealth Attorney's office taught me detail, and precision with police reports and findings (among other things). Property and Evidence enabled me to learn the proper procedures for dealing with property and evidence uncovered by fellow officers as well as the intricacies that go into cataloging and identifying each piece stored in P&E. The Leadership Enrichment Program provided me an opportunity to work side by side with my fellow recruits and to utilize both our strengths and weaknesses to the point of improving ourselves as a whole unit, not just individually. Ride-alongs proved to be as equally beneficial, learning from fellow officers already on the street and understanding some of the community nuances that occur on the beats, as well as the precinct dynamics that go along with the profession.
Police Recruit Damon
I started the employment process around the end of January 2007. I took the written entrance exam the last week of January and the physical agility test the 3rd week of February. I finished the rest of the police officer selection process around the middle of April. I was hired May 16th. The pre-hire experience is an excellent program. It allows you to learn all about the police department. Every police recruit should go through tthis program.
