What is a comprehensive plan and why is it updated?
The comprehensive plan is designed to be a guide for growth and development for the next 20 years. As the City's comprehensive plan serves as a general guide for the future development of the City. The Code of Virginia requires the City to review its comprehensive plan every five years. The current update process began in October 2005. The Planning Commission sought input for the update to the Plan from (4) citizen Task Forces including (1) Youth Task Force. The update is a result of substantial public input over a three-year planning period to improve the readability of the Plan, update the Plan to reflect current conditions in the City, and provide a policy framework for the City.
