This is the homepage for the City of Newport News Department of Planning.
The Planning Department staff is responsible for assisting the Planning Commission and the City Council in all aspects of comprehensive and current planning in Newport News. This includes the development of the general plan, through the 'Framework for the Future' process, and action taken on applications for use permits and change of zoning. It staffs the Planning Commission, the Hilton Village Architectural Review Board, the North End Huntington Heights Architectural Review Board, and is the lead agency in implementing the requirements of the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act.

Applications Prior to filing an application, the applicant is required to contact the Department of Planning to arrange for a preliminary review of his or her proposal. The purpose of the preliminary review is to ensure that all required supporting information is included with the application.
