Courthouse Way Community Center is home to Instructional Program Classes including: decorative painting, sewing, crocheting, knitting, quilting, martial arts, music dance, cooking, sign language and fitness. Please see the semi-annual Parks and Recreation Tabloid for class information.

Some of the center’s features include:

  • Therapeutic Recreation Program: Before/After School

  • 1 multi-purpose room with a dance floor and mirrored wall

This center offers Instructional Classes, open recreation, sports programs, special events, after school programs, and a summer day camp.  The  fitness room (ages 18 and over) is designed to develop and/or enhance fitness levels of all participants from beginners to advanced. It includes a multi-gym weight machine, dumbbells and barbells with flat, seated, and adjustable benches; bicycle and treadmill, abdominal machine and neck deck. A two-mile indoor walking track is also available for use in the gymnasium.

The Doris Miller Pool (outdoor,open summer only) includes a 9,594.5 sq. ft. pool area and 3,333 sq. ft. “spray” play area. It features a zero depth beach entry and has a maximum depth of five feet. The pool includes many activity features that are found at commercial “water parks” including geyser sprays, animal sculpture sprayers, a spray tunnel, a 9'11” tube slide, and Spa Jet seating area. The pool area has a maximum capacity of 400 people.  Waivers must be signed for each individual before using the pool (children under 18 must have a parent or guardian sign the waiver). Children 12 and under must be accompanied by and adult. Admission to the pool is free.

ON GOING ACTIVITIES:

P.I.C. (POSITIVE IMAGE CLUB) Ages: 13 – 17
Helping teens become responsible, caring citizens and acquire skills for participating in the democratic process is the main thrust of this program. The participants of this program will develop leadership skills and be provided opportunities for planning, decision making, community service and celebrating our national heritage. This club is open to young people ages 13 – 17.

 

E.S.T.E.E.M. CLUB ( Every Step Towards Excellence Ensures Mastery) - Middle School Students
This program will introduce youth to educational topics such as self esteem, self respect, nutrition, etiquette, dressing for success, sports outings, leadership groups, fitness/weight room, a career expo and many other exciting topics and activities.


YOUTH PATROL “DRILL TEAM” - Ages: 6 - 16
Youth Patrol is designed to strengthen the character development of its youth membership through the innovative African – American art form called “boogie drill.” A traditional style of military marching with an urban flair. Drill with a hard hat tradition. The Youth Patrol program is a positive alternative to gang activity, violence and criminal involvement.

 

EAST END “FLYERS”
Participants will be introduced to fitness and skills related to the
TRACK & FIELD CLUB track and field sporting events. This includes distances, sprint &Hurdle races, as well as field events. Participants will compete in Track and field events sanctioned by USATF & AAU.


GEORGE S. GREEN
SUMMER DAY CAMP Doris Miller Community Center announces its annual George S. Green Summer camp. This is an eight (8) week camp for youth ages 6 – 13. Cost: $100.00 per camper. The George S. Green Summer Day Camp will provide participants with fun recreation activities, which will be physically and mentally stimulating. Summer camp runs June 18 – August 10, 2012.


SPRING BREAK-OUT CAMP The Doris Miller Community Center’s “Spring Break-Out” is a safe, fun filled activity packed week of special events running in April, during spring break. We offer a wide variety of games, trips and arts & craft activities.

USDA DAY The Doris Miller Community Center staff along with The Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula, distributes USDA food items to the public, every third Tuesday of the month. 2:00pm – 4:00pm. Participants must be 18 years of age and possess a Pictured Identification card.

 

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM Doris Miller is offering an after school program for school age children that promotes social, emotional and physical development. This program will offer homework assistance, computer time, creative arts & craft projects, challenging gym activities, table games, fun excursions, special events and much more. This program is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday 3:00pm – 6:30pm, Wednesday - 12:30pm – 6:30pm.

 

 

BLACK HISTORY PROGRAM Doris Miller Community Center in partnership with the South East Community Partners celebrate Black History month in grand style! There are several programs during the month that commemorate(s) the accomplishments of African – Americans.

 


SENTARA GIRLS BASKETBALL LEAGUE (Ages 10 – 15 years)
Registration begins July 2012 $25.00 registration fee and rental of uniform. Parent/Guardian must pay any additional league fees for girls participation. Practice: Fridays - 5:45pm – 8:30pm

 

REGISTRATION FOR THE DORIS MILLER COMMUNITY CENTER’S WEIGHT ROOM IS ON-GOING

$10.00 Annual Registration
$5.00 Monthly (Seniors 50 & Over)
$5.00 Monthly (Teens 14 – 17 Years)
$10.00 Monthly (Adults 18 – 49)
This includes the use of fitness equipment (treadmill, bicycle, multi-gym weight machine and free weights) 2 mile indoor walking track is also available for use in the gym.

Facility Rentals:

The Brittingham-Midtown Community Center offers meeting rooms of all sizes—from the tournament quality gymnasium to the most intimate meeting room for rent. Whether you are planning your company’s off-site meeting, or your child’s birthday party, the Brittingham-Midtown Community Center has a space designed especially for you.  The multi-purpose rooms range in capacity from 30 to 80 seats. The center also features several specialty rooms for your events, including two fully-equipped kitchens, two mirrored dance rooms, and two stages for theatrical rehearsals and performances. The aquatic center, gymnasium, and outdoor pavilion are also available for special events and functions.  To arrange for a tour or to receive more information, please call (757) 591-4853.
