City Center at Oyster Point Fountain Plaza
Newport News Parks, Recreation & Tourism will present the Oyster Point Oyster Roast on Friday, November 13, 2009 from 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at the City Center at Oyster Point Fountain Plaza. Oysters are the stars of this event with local seafood vendors selling roasted, steamed, and fried oysters. Fried shrimp, fried scallops, crab cakes, seafood chowder, soft shelled crabs, clam chowder, and she-crab soup will also be served. Non-nautical food will include smoked sausages, hot dogs, corn dogs, and nachos.
Local favorite The Band of Oz will perform and a dance floor will be set up in front of the stage. The Working Watermen’s Association will display the tools of their trade, including a historic crab skiff, and will demonstrate oyster shucking and net making. Everyone can try “tonging for oysters” with authentic oystering tongs. Educational exhibits will be presented by the US Coast Guard (boating safety and law enforcement, Coast Guard Boat), Newport News Police Marine Unit (Police Boat), Colonial Sail and Power Squadron (boating safety display), NOAA Monitor National Marine Sanctuary (marine life display, sanctuary information, conservation information, and maritime heritage) Chesapeake Bay Foundation (will be collecting the oyster shells for restoration, volunteer information), Hampton Roads Naval Museum (display on the “Age of Sail” and museum information), The Salvation Army (Emergency Disaster Canteen), Newport News Parks, Recreation & Tourism Aquatics (water safety information, a children’s craft, canoes, and kayaks and other water equipment used for recreation in the city facilities and parks), Newport News Visitors Center (Newport News attractions information), and The Mariners Museum (museum information).
Beverage sales will benefit the Verizon Telecom Pioneers- Peninsula Council. Food is for purchase “pay-as-you-go” from the food vendors.
Admission to Oyster Point Oyster Roast is free. Free parking is available in City Center parking garages. Directions: from I-64, take Exit 256A onto Oyster Point Rd., turn left onto Jefferson Ave., turn left onto Thimble Shoals Blvd., turn left onto Town Center Dr. into City Center at Oyster Point.
