Newport News Parks, Recreation & Tourism will present King-Lincoln Park Day, an afternoon showcasing all the recreational opportunities offered at King-Lincoln Park and the surrounding communities, on Saturday, June 2, 2012 from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. (King-Lincoln Park; 600 Jefferson Avenue). The event features a broad range of free activities for all ages including nature walks on the beach, children’s rides, give-a-ways, a fishing tournament, community exhibits, and live entertainment. New for 2012 are pony rides, free carnival games with prizes, a performance by 4Shore (competed on the 2011 season of The X-Factor television show) and children’s fishing on the King-Lincoln Park Fishing Pier. This year’s event will also have an expanded food vendor area ($) (fish fry, seafood, chicken, barbeque, and funnel cakes) and additional free parking areas.

Entertainers for the King-Lincoln Music Festival: Southeast Community Drumline & Puppet Show; The Rhythm Project- 12:00 p.m. (steel drums), the Happyland Band- 1:15 p.m. (horns/inspirational), 4Shore- 2:00 p.m. (Top 40), the Michael Clark Band featuring Tracy Clark- 4:00 p.m. (R & B/Top 40). Zoo Pro will show live animals inside the park’s Interpretive Center.

Give-a-ways will include Kids’ Summer Kick-Off Backpacks (while supplies last, one per child, child must be present to receive bag) and free Sno Cones. Kids will also enjoy free face painting, pony rides, carnival games, and free inflatable obstacles courses, slides, and moon bounces. (more)

Newport News Active Lifestyles Program will offer free Bingo games for seniors with prizes and line dancing demonstrations. The Doris Miller Community Center will hold basketball contests for prizes and the Newport News Tennis Program will showcase their Quick-Start Tennis Program. The Newport News Parks Division will lead beachfront interpretive tours with free sand-sifting kits (while supplies last) for kids. Newport News Aquatics will take registrations for their summer outdoor pools (call 591-4573 for registration requirements, parent/guardian must register). Newport News Animal Services will present demonstrations and provide information on animal care. Newport News Instructional Programs will play “Minute to Win It” games, the Newport News Youth Program will have sand art crafts for kids, and the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center will offer Karaoke.

Community exhibitors will offer information about their organizations, give-a-ways, and children’s activities at each booth (over forty booths).

King-Lincoln Park Day Fishing Contest - Prizes will be awarded to the person catching the BIGGEST (longest) qualifying fish anytime between 12:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. from the King-Lincoln Wave Screen Fishing Pier and also to the person catching the MOST qualifying fish anytime between 12:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Check-in (starting at 12:00 p.m.) at the Fishing Contest Tent (near Pinkett Stage) to receive armband immediately before fishing and stop on your way out to have fish measured and counted. Note: Only certain species will be counted and measured (see rules upon check-in). Winners will be announced at 4:15 p.m.. (must be present at time and place of announcement to win). Equipment and supplies are not provided, please bring your own. No purchase necessary. Employees of Newport News Parks, Recreation & Tourism are not eligible to participate in contest. Fishing license is not required, as June 2, 2012 is free fishing day in Virginia.

Fishing for Kids ages 8-12 on the King-Lincoln Fishing Pier: Rigs, bait and assistance are provided (parent or guardian must check-in child) and every participating child receives a prize (while supplies last).

Food Vendors ($) will sell fish, seafood, chicken, barbeque, and funnel cakes.


Admission, parking, and all activities are free. Additional free parking areas near the park have been added this year. Pets, bicycles, skateboards, radios, and amplified sound are not permitted in the festival area. Directions to King-Lincoln Park: take I-664 Exit 6/27th St., turn right onto Jefferson Avenue, proceed to King-Lincoln Park on the left at 6th Street.
