The 38th Newport News Fall Festival of Folklife will be held on Saturday, October 1 & Sunday, October 2, 2011 each day from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Newport News Park in Newport News, Virginia. The festival, which attracts 70,000 visitors each year, will feature over 230 exhibitors showcasing traditional crafts, heritage trade demonstrations, and food. The Lake Stage will feature Bluegrass Music by Kickin Grass and Winds of Grass; the Heritage Dance Stage will feature Native American Dance by Red Crooked Sky, Clogging by Kountry Kickers, and Hispanic Dance by the Latin Ballet of Virginia; and the Daily Press Children’s Stage will feature music by 2009 Emmy Award Winner Farmer Jason and Vaudeville entertainment by Jerry Brown.

Visitors will have the opportunity to watch the stages of craft production from natural raw materials through the finished product in the Heritage Area where craft/traditional tradespeople will showcase their skills (awards are given for Best Demonstration and Best Display). In the Juried Crafts Area, highly-skilled craftspeople will compete for $3,100 in cash prizes. The Marketplace Crafts Area will feature a wide variety of handmade crafts that are great for holiday gifts, collecting, or home decorating (award is given for Best Display).

Country inspired merchandise (jams, chocolate, herb mixes, and spiced nuts) will be sold in the Country Store Area. Seafood, barbeque, pork rinds, and other favorite festival food will be sold in the Food Area. Food vendors will compete for the “Best Food Vendor” award. Children can enjoy free “make and take” crafts, mule cart rides, balloon sculpting, a farm-themed play area, and an “antique” pedal car play area.

The Daily Press Children’s Stage will feature Jerry Brown (Vaudeville) at 11:15 p.m. and 1:45 p.m. (Saturday & Sunday), and Farmer Jason (2009 Emmy Award Winner – original children’s music) at 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. (Saturday & Sunday). The Lake Stage will feature Winds of Grass (Bluegrass) at 12:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. (Saturday & Sunday) and Kickin Grass (Bluegrass) at 1:15 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. (Saturday & Sunday). The Heritage Folk Dance Stage will offer performances by Red Crooked Sky American Indian Dance Troupe (Native American Dance) on Saturday and Sunday at 12:45 p.m. and 3:45 p.m., the Kountry Kickers (Clogging) on Saturday and Sunday at 1:45 p.m., and the Latin Ballet of Virginia ( Hispanic Dance) on Sunday at 11:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m.

Newport News Fall Festival of Folklife lapel pins (17th in the series), festival t-shirts, festival hats, and festival tote bags will be sold at the Newport News Parks, Recreation & Tourism Booth. Admission is free; parking fee $10.00 per vehicle on-site and at satellite areas (Greenwood Elementary School/Woodside High School).

Free shuttle bus service will run between the satellite parking areas and the festival. No pets permitted in the festival area. Newport News Park is located at the intersection of Ft. Eustis Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue (Exit 250B from I-64).

Juried Crafts Area:

41 High-quality craftspeople competing for $3,100 in awards (Best in Show $700.00, Best in Category $300.00). Categories- Wood, Glass, Fiber, Clay, Jewelry, Folk Art, Metal, and Other Crafts.

Marketplace Crafts Area:
117 Craftspeople selling a wide variety of crafts. Best Display wins $200.00.

Heritage Area:
35 Exhibitors demonstrating traditional crafts and trades: Civil War history, apple butter, knitting, quilting, pottery, nautical ropes, decoys, chair caning, wood carving, Plains Indian Tipi, wood turning, local history authors, Native American crafts, traditional living, basket weaving, watermen’s trades, livestock, sheep shearing, mule cart rides, alpacas, blacksmithing, rug hooking, antique farm equipment, chain saw art, scale ships and boats, historical musical instruments and performances, and antique automobiles. Awards are given for Best Demonstration ($200.00) and Best Display ($200.00).

Country Store:

19 vendors selling country inspired merchandise: kettle corn, bread, jams, fishing lures, baked goods, herb mixes, chocolates, clothing, and spiced nuts.

Children’s Activities:
Activities include: free make-and-take crafts and games by Newport News Youth Programs (Face Painting, Photo Op, Foam Leaf Friends, Pumpkin Sand Art Necklaces, Fall Fuzzy Color Your Own Bookmarks, Fall Foam Message Board, Bean Bag Toss Game with prizes), free balloon sculpting, “Funny Farm” play area, and an “antique” pedal car play area.

Food Vendors:
Vendors selling a variety of food items: funnel cakes, seafood, sausage, pork rinds, Thai food, roasted corn on the cob, turkey legs, barbecue, etc.

Festival t-shirts, Festival hats, Festival tote bags, Festival lapel pins (17th in the series), Newport News Parks, Recreation & Tourism; Newport News Libraries, Virginia Cooperative Extension, Newport News Master Gardeners, Newport News Green Corps, Junior Woman’s Club of Newport News, Friends of the Lee Hall Depot, Newport News Instructional Classes, Newport News Active Lifestyles Program, Newport News Visitor Center, Newport News Aquatics, Newport News Parks Division, Newport News Green Foundation, Sister Cities of Newport News, and the Newport News Green Corps.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

The following information concerns parking facilities, shuttle services, etc. for the 38th Newport News Fall Festival of Folklife on October 1 & 2, 2011:

·“No Parking” zones will be strictly enforced on Jefferson Avenue and Ft. Eustis Blvd. during
the Festival on October 1 & 2.

· There is a $10.00 per vehicle parking fee in both the park and the satellite parking lots. Shuttle buses to the Festival area are free.

· Satellite parking is available at:
Woodside High School (13450 Woodside Lane)
Greenwood Elementary School (13460 Woodside Lane & Ft. Eustis Blvd.)

· NO PETS ALLOWED IN THE FESTIVAL AREA.

·For everyone’s comfort and protection, pets, bicycles, skateboards, and radios are NOT allowed in the Festival area.

·For traffic and weather updates during Fall Festival, listen to: BOB 93.7 U.S. Country 106 FM, WNIS 790 AM
