The 39th Newport News Fall Festival of Folklife will be held on Saturday, October 6 & Sunday, October 7, 2012 each day from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Newport News Park in Newport News, Virginia. The festival, which attracts 70,000 visitors each year, will feature over 200 exhibitors showcasing traditional crafts, heritage trade demonstrations, and food. New entertainers for 2012 from Hampton Roads include The Hunts, a popular family Celtic/Folk/Rock group. Other first-time festival performers are Bria Kelly & Logan Flurry, The Honey Dewdrops and Atumpan- The Talking Drums.


NEW for 2012: Pumpkin Patch- Kids can choose a pumpkin from the patch ($1.00 for small, $3.00 for large), transport it by wheel barrow to a decoration station where they can add a face and accessories, weigh it, and then record its weight and name on its “birth certificate.”

Visitors will have the opportunity to watch the stages of craft production from natural raw materials through the finished product in the Heritage Area where craft/traditional tradespeople will showcase their skills (awards are given for Best Demonstration and Best Display). In the Juried Crafts Area, highly-skilled craftspeople will compete for $3,100 in cash prizes. The Marketplace Crafts Area will feature a wide variety of handmade crafts that are great for holiday gifts, collecting, or home decorating (award is given for Best Display).


Country inspired merchandise (jams, baked goods, herb mixes, and dairy products) will be sold in the Country Store Area. Seafood, barbeque, pork rinds, and other favorite festival food will be sold in the Food Area. New food vendors include Cakealicious Design Studio (gourmet cupcakes and cookies), Apple Frankies Enterprises (buffalo chicken wings) and Divine Wood (wood fired pizzas). Food vendors will compete for the “Best Food Vendor” award.


The Arboretum Stage will feature The Honey Dewdrops (Folk) at 11:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. (Saturday & Sunday) and The Hunts (Celtic/Folk/Rock) at 12:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. (Saturday & Sunday). The Daily Press Children’s Stage will feature Jerry Brown (Vaudeville) at 1:00 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. (Saturday & Sunday), Atumpan- The Talking Drums (African Drums and Storytelling) at 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. (Saturday & Sunday), and West African Dance (Traditional African Dance) at 3:00 p.m. (Saturday & Sunday). The Lake Stage will feature the Ron Fetner Band (Folk/Blues) at 12:15 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. (Saturday & Sunday),  Winds of Grass (Bluegrass) at 1:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. (Saturday), and Bria Kelly & Logan Flurry at 1:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. (Sunday). The Heritage Dance Stage will offer performances by Red Crooked Sky American Indian Dance Troupe (Native American Dance) at 11:45 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. (Saturday & Sunday) and the Kountry Kickers (Clogging) at 1:30 p.m. (Saturday & Sunday).

In addition to the new Pumpkin Patch area ($1.00 for small pumpkin, $3.00 for large pumpkin), children can also enjoy free “make and take” crafts and free fall-themed activities.

Newport News Fall Festival of Folklife lapel pins (18th in the series), festival t-shirts, festival hats, and festival tote bags will be sold at the Newport News Parks, Recreation & Tourism Booth. Admission is free; parking fee $10.00 per vehicle on-site and at satellite areas (Greenwood Elementary School/Woodside High School). Free shuttle bus service will run between the satellite parking areas and the festival. No pets permitted in the festival area. Newport News Park is located at the intersection of Ft. 39th Newport News Fall Festival of Folklife Exhibit Areas:

Juried Crafts Area:
31 High-quality craftspeople competing for $3,100 in awards (Best in Show $700.00, Best in Category $300.00). Categories- Wood, Glass, Fiber, Clay, Jewelry, Folk Art, Metal, and Other Crafts.

Marketplace Crafts Area:
102 Craftspeople selling a wide variety of crafts. Best Display wins $200.00.

Heritage Area:
23 Exhibitors demonstrating traditional crafts and trades: Civil War history, apple butter, knitting, quilting, pottery, nautical ropes, decoys, wood turning, local history authors, basket weaving, Amish baked goods, livestock, sheep shearing, mule cart rides, alpacas, blacksmithing, working watermen, antique farm equipment, scale ships and boats, historical musical instruments and performances, and antique automobiles. Awards are given for Best Demonstration ($200.00) and Best Display ($200.00).

Country Store:
19 vendors selling country inspired merchandise: kettle corn, bread, jams, specialty foods and sauces, engraved tags, handmade soap, dairy products, fishing lures, baked goods, herb mixes, clothing, and spiced nuts.

Children’s Activities:
Activities include: free make-and-take crafts and games by Newport News Youth Programs (Saturday: Fall Leaf Sand Art Bottles, Turkey Clothespin Magnet Craft, Magic Scratch Fall Leaves, Happy Fall Yall, Doorknob Craft, Carnival Style Games; Sunday: Happy Fall Y’all Bookmark Craft, Turkey Clothespin, Magnet Craft, Scarecrow & Fall Leaf Suncatchers, Fall Bag Decorating with Stamps & Rubbing Plates, fall-themed activities) NEW for 2012: Pumpkin Patch- Kids can choose a pumpkin ($1.00 for small, $3.00 for large) from the patch, transport it by wheel barrow to a decoration station where they can add a face and accessories, weigh it, and then record its weight and name on its “birth certificate.”


Food Area:

Vendors selling a variety of food items: funnel cakes, seafood, sausage, pork rinds, roasted corn on the cob, turkey legs, barbecue, etc.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

The following information concerns parking facilities, shuttle services, etc. for the 39th Newport News Fall Festival of Folklife on October 6 & 7, 2012:

•“No Parking” zones will be strictly enforced on Jefferson Avenue and Ft. Eustis Blvd. during
the Festival on October 6 & 7.

• There is a $10.00 per vehicle parking fee in both the park and the satellite parking lots. Shuttle buses to the Festival area are free.

• Satellite parking is available at:
Woodside High School (13450 Woodside Lane)
Greenwood Elementary School (13460 Woodside Lane & Ft. Eustis Blvd.)

• NO PETS ALLOWED IN THE FESTIVAL AREA.

•For everyone’s comfort and protection, pets, bicycles, skateboards, and radios are NOT allowed in the Festival area.


DIRECTIONS TO NEWPORT NEWS PARK:

I-64 Westbound
- Take Exit 250B, At the traffic light, make a left onto Jefferson Ave.
 Newport News Park is on the right

I-64 Eastbound
• Take Exit 250B, At the traffic light, make a left onto Jefferson Ave.
• Newport News Park is approximately 1/4 mile up Jefferson Ave. on the right
