Inclement Weather Policy
If Newport News Public Schools are closed for inclement weather, then all Active Lifestyles Programs' Senior Centers are closed. See weather updates/closings or call the Active Lifestyles Program at 926-1446 for cancellations.
Overview: With a goal to create, implement and evaluate programs that fulfill the recreational, education, physical and social needs of adults, the Active Lifestyles Program offers classes, special events, trips, lecture series and daily activities at five senior/community centers located throughout Newport News. Additionally, the Active Lifestyles: Enriching the Lives of Adults 50+ newsletter is printed quarterly as an informational guide to current issues in the health field, helpful hints on keeping and improving mental and physical well-being, as well as listing services, classes and events scheduled for the senior centers. While a number of programs and classes require an instructional fee, each senior center offers some form of daily activities free of charge.
Mission Statement: To enrich the environment of the mature adult community with programs that will heighten the participant's quality of life.
ACTIVE LIFESTYLES ADVISORY COMMITTEE:
Created in 1992 to address major issues, enhance public awareness, assist staff with program planning/improvement projects, and to promote a positive image of aging and disabilities through education. The Committee is made up of a group of citizens who share a concern for others and provide a means by which participants can address issues that are pertinent to the services provided by Newport News Parks, Recreation & Tourism.

Classes, Clubs & Activities:
Art – A variety of two-dimensional mediums of watercolor, acrylic painting, oil painting, pen and ink and portraiture painting taught by art professionals. Classes offered for the novice to the knowledgeable.
Crafts and Hobbies – For those who truly enjoy hands-on learning. In addition to the following, new classes are periodically added: upholstery, ceramics, jewelry making and quilting.
Computers – Classes from the basic to the intermediate. In today's high tech world, knowing your computer and its functions is to your advantage.
Dance – Keep moving with traditional ballroom dancing and tap-dancing; contemporary line dancing or sultry Tango lessons.
Fashion Elegantés – Walking the runway, wearing designer clothing, celebrating the positive attitude of today's seniors is what Fashion Elegantés is all about. Comprised of mature adults, these “elegant” men and women have been putting on fashion shows since 1991. New members are always welcome. Quarterly classes, “The Essence of Modeling,” are required and help develop poise and confidence.
Fit-Natics Fitness Program – Open to adults over 50 this program features state-of-the-art fitness equipment. Annual membership fee is only $10 with a minimal monthly fee. Program held at Doris Miller Community Center.
Annual Golf Classic – Held at Deer Run Golf Course in Newport News each May, this annual event has become a favorite of mature golfers. Prizes, complimentary gifts, lunch, and awards (to include bragging rights) are included. Look for information early each year, or request to be put on the mailing list by calling (757) 926-1446.
AARP Defensive Driving Classes – Offered throughout the year at various Centers. Refresh your driving skills, lower your risk of accidents and possibly receive a discount on your insurance. Find the nearest course listed in the Active Lifestyles newsletter or NN Parks, Recreation & Tourism Tabloid.
Music – One-on-one piano lessons taught in a relaxed atmosphere.
Personal Well-Being – Improve your balance and stamina through gentle yoga, meditation, or Tai Chi classes especially tailored for mature adults.
Money Matters – Invest in your future through classes today! Certain classes designed for women investors.
Senior Fitness Classes – If dancing isn't your cup of tea, try our Living Well: Stretch and Toning class or Homebound Exercise Show, viewed on Channel 48.
Softball Game- Enjoy a friendly game of softball geared for those over 40. Players are needed and spectators are welcome to cheer on their team. Everyone enjoys their favorite ballgame foods- hot dogs and chips. Always FREE and always FUN!

Trips/Events Registration, Cancellation & Refund Policies
Registration: Persons interested in going on any of our trips must register by the registration deadline date – date varies with tour companies and Active Lifestyles policies.
The Active Lifestyles Program accepts checks, money orders, cash and VISA and MasterCard as payment. You may register for trips and special events through the mail, at any Active Lifestyles center, or by visiting the Active Lifestyles Administration Office at 700 Town Center Drive, Suite 320, Newport News, VA 23606. When registering in person with a personal check, your name, current address and phone number, and identification number must be listed on the check. The check can only be accepted from the person whose name appears on the check and the check can only be written for the actual amount of the trip (or deposit or scheduled payment). A service fee will be assessed on all returned checks. Make checks payable to: City of Newport News.
Cancellations: If the need arises for individual to cancel their pre-paid registration, they must do so in writing by the cancellation deadline date – date varies with tour companies and Active Lifestyles policies.
Trips will be canceled if minimum reservations are not reached by the registration deadline date. If you must cancel your trip for any reason, cancelations must be made in writing before the cancellation deadline date in order to receive a refund.
Refunds: Refunds will only be given with a written request received before the designated cancellation deadline date for a trip. Enrollee assumes the risk of changes in personal affairs or health.
Participants may request a refund by submitting a written request, stating the reason for the refund, to the Active Lifestyles Program at least one week prior to the cancellation deadline. Please note that we do not give refunds after the cancellation deadline date. All refunds are processed within 30 days of receiving the cancellation letter. There will be a 10% processing fee for all refunds made. This is an administrative charge that will be in addition to any portion of the tour that cannot be refunded due to tour company policies. Long distance trips that require an outside vendor will follow the vendor’s refund policies. Refunds may be given if you have a replacement or there is a waiting list for the trip.
Travel insurance (covering sickness, injury, lost luggage, etc.) is highly recommended for long distance and overnight trips. Insurance may be included in certain trips. When requested, Active Lifestyle’s staff can provide names of insurance providers.
Please note: There are no refunds issued for special events.

Denbigh-Lee Hall Senior Center (DSC) offers activities Monday through Friday and include: low impact exercise, yoga, Tai Chi, bridge, craft group, pinochle, special programs and Peninsula Agency on Aging Dining Club. The Center hosts special events such as picnics, health fairs, health screenings, speaker's bureau, cultural enrichment programs, and educational seminars and AARP Defensive Driving Classes. The Center also has a computer lab that provides access to websites that provide timely and accurate Medicare information. The Center is located in the Disabled American Veteran's (DAV) building in the Stoneybrook area of Newport News. The DAV works closely with the Senior Center to provide quality programs to the mature adults. The facility offers a large meeting room, picnic area and ample parking.

The Active Lifestyles Program at Doris Miller Community Center offers structured programs through “Wisdom in Motion” and the “Fit-Natics” Fitness Program. The Wisdom in Motion group meets three times per week at the Center and participates in exercise/walking programs, bingo, pinochle, health fairs, health screenings and various celebrations. “Fit-Natics” offers state-of-the-art fitness equipment. Membership is open to new participants.
The center also sponsors a Fall and a Spring extravaganza, holiday tea, fashion shows, Valentine's Dance, and other special events. Located in the Southeast Newport News community, the facility includes a large gym, game room, dance/exercise rooms, and craft areas.

The Hilton Senior Center (HSC) offers rotating daily activities of pinochle, billiards, card tournaments and group meetings such as the retired men's club. Upholstery class, Tango and ballroom dance classes, health screenings, AARP Defensive Driving class and special events are also scheduled. The center is also available for groups to rent for special functions, receptions, meetings, parties, or recitals. There are three separate rooms and a large kitchen available. The Active Lifestyles Program at Brittingham-Midtown Community Center offers an early morning track-walking program in addition to its later scheduled light aerobics, Tai Chi and Yoga classes. Additional instructional classes are scheduled throughout the week: acrylic, oil & watercolor painting, computer classes for beginners and advanced, line dancing, Golden Steppers tap dancing, jewlery making, portraiture painting, investment classes, piano and more. Modeling classes, "The Essence of Modeling," are offered quarterly. The center also offers AARP Defensive Driving class, rubber stamping, health and safety seminars, cultural enrichment programs, monthly bingo program, nutrition seminars, senior games, craft shows, cookouts, dances, fashion shows, fitness seminars, and an array of educational opportunities.
