Library Fines & Fees
Explains the various library fines and fees for overdue and lost materials, bad check fees, etc.
You can pay fines at any branch of the Newport News Public Library System or at any one of the Bookmobile stops. Fines may be paid with cash, check or money order. We are unable to accept credit/debit cards at this time.
Fines are charged for all overdue materials checked out on adult library cards. Fines are charged on a per-item, per day basis.
Help avoid fines by receiving an e-mail reminder notice three days before your item is due.
- Adult materials $0.15
- Children's materials (checked out on adult card) $0.05
- PBK paperbacks $0.05
- A-V equipment $1.00
- Children’s cards (ages 17 and under) No fines
- Maximum accumulated fine $5.00
- Returned check fee $35.00
Patrons will have their borrowing privileges blocked when they reach the maximum accumulated fine or an item is 30 days overdue.
NOTICE TO LIBRARY USERS
In an effort to get overdue items returned to the library, patron accounts with items more than 45 days overdue and who have received overdue notices and bill letters will be turned over to a collection agency. A $10.00 service charge will be added to those accounts.
Once each year the Library System notifies the City Finance Department of outstanding fines and library materials which are more than six months overdue. The Finance Department then requests the State Taxation Department to assess these charges against any tax refund or lottery winnings due to the holder of the library card.
*Please be advised that, in addition to these charges, the City of Newport News assesses an additional $25.00 administrative fee above and beyond any charge levied by City departments.
