All libraries will be closed on Saturday July 4th for Independence Day.

The Law Library will be closed on Friday July 3rd for Independence Day.

Effective July 1, 2009 the West Ave Library will change its hours of operation to Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 10:00 am - 6:00 pm.

Summer Youth Employment Program

Are you between the ages of 16-24 and interested in a summer job? Are you a high school drop out, teen parent, or IEP student? Then this is the program for you. Come to one of our meetings, held three times a week, for more information and to complete an application.

 

Bookflix

Scholastic Bookflix now Available (remote access)

Scholastic BookFlix is a new online literacy resource that pairs classic video storybooks from Weston Woods with related nonfiction eBooks from Scholastic to build a love of reading and learning. The engaging way to link fact and fiction, BookFlix reinforces early reading skills and introduces children to a world of knowledge and exploration. Browser requirements for Bookflix.

New Books and Beyond Newsletter

Last year, the Library System presented 824 FREE programs for adults, teens and children and added many new services. Now you can make sure that you don't miss out on any news about all of the Library's free programs, services, closings, and more by signing up to get the new "Books & Beyond" newsletter by e-mail. This new monthly e-mailed newsletter replaces the printed "Books & Beyond" newsletter, which will no longer be available after the July issue. The newsletter is free and you may unsubscribe at any time.

Summer Reading Program Begins June 22

Hey kids - the Summer Reading Program is right around the corner. Get creative this year, read books, and win prizes! This summer you can learn about cartooning, make your own tie-dye shirts, see magic tricks, learn yoga, make masks, plus a whole lot more. Registration is required for some programs, beginning June 1.

Teen Summer Reading Program

The Teen Summer Reading Program also begins on June 22. Teen ages 12-17 can sign up between June 22 - July 31 for "Express Yourself @ the Library". Activities this summer include learning how to knit & crochet, playing DDR and Guitar Hero, watch your favorite teen movies, and much more. Registration is required for some programs, beginning June 1. Teen volunteers are also needed to help with the kids Summer Reading Program.


Mona Lisa Master the Art of Reading

Starting June 22 adults can also win prizes in the Summer Reading Program for Adults. This years grand prize is dinner for two and a gift certificate to the Ferguson Center. Explore your creative side with programs on cake decorating, classic guitar, painting pottery, poetry and more. Some events require registration.

Have you always wanted to learn a foreign language? Learn now from the comfort of your home with Mango Lanuages. All you need is a Newport News Public Library card to get started. Twelve languages are available, including Spanish, German, Italian, French, Russian, Mandarin Chinese, Greek, and more.

All Newport News libraries are now SNAP centers and offer access to the SHARE network. Trained staff are available to help job seekers with job search assistance, unemployent insurance claim filing, and more.
