NNPLS Computer Class Descriptions

Course descriptions of the various computer classes taught by the library system.

Access 301 

A two or four-session course designed to teach students how to create databases. Data structure and data organization will be discussed.

Prerequisites: Excel 201, Excel 202 and Word 201 

Computer Training Orientation

These 45 minute sessions give you a chance to meet the computer class instructors and see what free computer courses are available at Newport News Public Libraries. An overview of the class curriculum will be given, as well as instructions on how to register for classes. Registration is not required for this event and is not a prerequisite for classes. Sessions are held monthly at Grissom, Main Street, and Pearl Bailey. Please check our current course listings for specific dates and times in your area.

Computer Basics 101

A two or four-session course designed to teach computer basics. This course will include an overview of the computer, light typing, mouse navigation, and some word processing.

Prerequisites: Entry level course, no prerequisites required.

Computer Basics 102

A two or four-session course designed to teach students to use Windows for file management, multi-tasking functions, and clipboard use. Working with the desktop will be explored.

Prerequisites: Computer Basics 101

Creative Cards 201

A one session course designed to teach students how to create greeting cards for different occasions using Microsoft Publisher.

Prerequisites: Computer Basics 101& Publisher 201

Email 201

A two-session course designed to teach e-mail techniques. This course will cover attaching documents to email messages and setting up and using the online address book.

Prerequisites: Computer Basics 101

Excel 201

A two or four-session course designed to teach students how to use Excel. Student will learn how to create basic worksheets.  

Prerequisites: Word 201 

Excel 202

A two or four-session course designed to teach students Microsoft Excel skills beyond basic worksheet functions and creation. Students will receive hands-on, in-depth experience using MS Excel.

Prerequisites: Excel 201 and Word 201

Facebook 201

A two-session training course designed to teach students how to use the social media site known as Facebook. Students will learn how to create and edit Facebook Profiles.

Prerequisites: Internet 201 and Email 201

Freeware 301

A one session course designed to give students basic knowledge of open source applications and programs. A USB Flash drive is recommended.

 Prerequisites: Internet 201, Word 201, & USB Memory Stick 101

Internet 201

A two or four -session course designed to teach students how to use the Internet. Students will learn searching techniques, how to use browsers/search engines, how to send and receive e-mail, and much more.

Prerequisites: Computer Basics 101

Computer Protection 201

A one session course covering topics related to internet safety, protecting one’s privacy, and wireless networking safety.

Prerequisites: Word 201, Internet 201, Email 201

Internet Searching 201

A one session designed to teach students how to use search engines and searching techniques.

Prerequisites: Computer Basics 102, Word 101 and Internet 201

Job Search 201

A one session course covering creating online resumes and online job applications.

PowerPoint 201

A two or four -session course designed to teach students how to use PowerPoint. Students will learn how to complete computerized presentations.

Prerequisites: Computer Basics 101& Word 201

Publisher 201

A two or four -session course designed to introduce the student to desktop publishing using Publisher. Students learn basic typesetting and page layout techniques.

Prerequisites: Computer Basics 101 and Word 201

USB Memory Stick 201

A one session class instructing students on how to connect, save, and safely disconnect memory sticks from the computer. Students should have their own USB Memory Sticks.

Prerequisites: Computer Basics 101 and Computer Basics 102

WinWay Resume 201

A one session course designed to teach professional resume formatting.

Prerequisites: Computer Basics 101, Computer Basics 102, Internet 201, and Word 201

Word 201

A two or four -session course designed to teach students how to use Word. Student will learn how to create, save, print and format basic documents.
 
Required prerequisites: Computer Basics 101 & 102
 
Word 202

A two or four -session course designed to teach students advanced document formatting.
 
Prerequisite: Word 101
