Alphabetical list of databases available remotely from the Newport News Public Library System.

 Most databases require a Newport News Public Library card in order to access remotely. Please visit your nearest library to obtain a free library card.

African-American History & Culture - includes more than 3700 biographies and over 1000 pictures, covers 500 years in African-American history, and has primary sources, timelines, and more

America's Newspapers - full-text article of of over 600 newspapers, including the Daily Press and Virginian-Pilot

Ancestry.com - We have a full subscription to Ancestry.com. Available only at the Main Street Library, Virginiana Room.

Auto Repair Reference Center - auto repair information on over 26,000 vehicles, dating back to 1945

Biography & Resource Center - provides biographical information on over 320,000 people

Bookflix - Scholastic BookFlix is a new online literacy resource that pairs classic video storybooks from Weston Woods with related nonfiction eBooks from Scholastic to build a love of reading and learning. For in-library access, click here.

Business & Company Resource Center - company and industry news and journal articles 

Business Decisions - this new small business oriented database allows users to create custom maps based on consumer market data, consumer spending data, demographic and housing data, population estimates and forecasts and Census 2000 data. 

Career Library - research careers, colleges, and financial aid and watch a video library covering various occupations. 

Computer Database - locate news and articles on computer hardware, software, and related issues

Contemporary Literary Criticism - collection of critical essays on contemporary authors

CultureGrams - provides information on 190 countries, all 50 states, recipes, famous people, maps, and more

Daily Press - search for full-text articles of the Daily press back to 1989

Directory of Publications and Broadcast Media - an e-book which provides detailed information on print and broadcast media outlets.

E-Library - offers full-text journal and newspaper articles, TV/radio transcripts

Expanded Academic ASAP 1980 - full-text articles covering a variety of academic subjects

Foundation Directory Online - The premier database for reseaching grants from around the country. This database is available only at the Main Street Library, 2nd floor Business Center.

Gale Virtual Reference Library - full-text access to 19 major reference works

General One File - one-stop source for news and periodical articles on a wide range of topics

General Reference Center Gold - find the latest articles on current events, popular culture, business and industry coverage, the arts and sciences, sports, hobbies, and more

GreenFile - environment oriented database covering topics like glocal warming, recycling, alternative fuels, and more.

Health & Wellness Resource Center and Alternative Health Module

Heritage Quest - poweful genealogy and local history datbase that allows you to search the US Federal Census from 1790-1930, over 25,000 family and local history books, PERSI index of over 2.1 million articles, Revolutionary War records, Freedman's Bank records, and much more.                InfoTrac Junior Edition - for middle and high school students

                InfoTrac Kids Edition - for K-5, with easy access to full-text magazines, newspapers  and reference books

                Kids InfoBits - for grades K-5, with subject based information and age-appropriate journals and newspapers

                Student Edition - for high school students

In the First Person - an index to letters, diaries, oral histories, and personal narratives

Legal Forms - access to over 1000 forms covering legal and business topics such as divorce, contracts, power of attorney, wills, landlord/tenant, and much more.

Legal Trac - provides indexing for 1,427 of the most highly regarded legal publications, 123 of which are full text. These include major law reviews, legal newspapers, law specialty publications, bar association journals, and international legal journal

Literature Criticism Online - search hundreds of volumes of Nineteenth & Twentieth Century Literary Criticism. along with Children's Literature Review

Literature Resource Center - search 300+ volumes of Contemporary Authors, 250+ volumes of the Dictionary of Literary Biography, and literary criticisms

Mango Languages - learn how to speak 12 foreign languages, including Spanish, French, Italian, Russian, Brazilian Portugese, Japanese, German, Greek, Mandarin Chinese, ESL Spanish, ESL Polish, ESL Brazilian Portugese.

Military and Intelligence - has more than 500 titles and more than 7 million articles to meet the needs of military personnel.

Newport News Digital Library - Includes images of postcards before 1923, booklets describing Newport News before 1923, and maps drawn by the Old Dominion Land Company.

Obituary Index - Index of obituaries from the Daily Press between 1898 and 1988 and from the Times-Herald between 1902-1915.

Old Dominion Land Company Online Exhibit - Includes images and excerpts on the development of Newport News, 1880-1930. Includes teacher lesson plans for grades 6-12.

Professional Collection - more than 250 full-text educational periodicals and journals covering arts, psychology, adolescent issues, curriculum, sports, law, technology and more

Religion and Philosophy - custom selection of more than 250 magazines and academic journals covering religion and the related areas of philosophy, archaeology, and anthropology.

Teacher Reference Center - indexes over 260 education related journals and books

Testing and Education Reference Center - search for college information, graduate programs, financial aid and scholarship information, and take online practice tests for the SAT, GRE, ASVAB, and lots more
