Schedules for Participating Branches
Kids Summer Reading | Children ages 0-11 may sign up at any Newport News Public Library to receive a reading log to keep track of books read. Ages 0-5 and beginning readers may participate by having someone read to them. Storytime programs for ages 0-5 are offered at several branch libraries throughout the summer. Incentives are awarded to encourage children to keep reading during the summer. Children must visit the Library and share their log with staff to receive prizes. Those who complete a reading log receive a certificate and a free book.
Teen Summer Reading | Teens ages 12-18 may get a reading log and earn credit for signing up online, attending a program, reading a book and writing a review. Incentives are also awarded to teens who bring their log to the Library. Teens receive a certificate and a choice of a free book when their reading log is completed. Teens can enter a completed reading log in a drawing for an iPod Shuffle. One iPod Shuffle winner will be drawn at the Grissom, Main Street and Pearl Bailey Libraries at the completion of the Summer Reading Program.
Adults can enter drawings for each Library book they read and attend free movie screenings and a book and film discussion.
Family programs are also available in the branch libraries. These programs are designed for children and their families and will cover variety of topics.
The Summer Reading Program is generously supported by the Friends of the Newport News Public Library System, Fazoli’s, McDonald’s, Golden Corral, Moe’s Southwest Grill, and the Library of Virginia.
