NNJS Programs

 

 

Objective - The objective of the Newport News Department of Juvenile Services residential programs is to meet the basic medical, physical, educational, social and recreational needs of residents; and to provide and maintain a facility which is functional, safe and secure in a healthy environment. The objective of the non-residential programs is to provide structured supervision for young offenders, pending further Court intervention, during traditionally high risk/low supervision time periods while integrating the youth into community resources that will provide long-term support and address barriers to decrease recidivism. 

 

Position - The Newport News Department of Juvenile Services routinely recruits for the position of Juvenile Services Counselor II, full-time (starting salary - $32,690/yr) and part-time (starting salary - $13.91/hr), to staff our Secure Detention and Community Programs. Job Description - In this rewarding position, the incumbent will process juveniles in and out of residential and non-residential programs. The applicant should possess general knowledge of behavioral observation and reporting techniques. The applicant must have the ability to utilize counseling, interviewing, and behavioral management techniques, and possess general knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and procedures. The applicant must possess the ability to plan, schedule, and prioritize juvenile activities, maintain and exhibit sound judgment under stressful situations, and intervene effectively in crisis situations. In addition, the incumbent must have the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and be able to serve as a lead worker as well as train other counselors.

 

Requirements - This position requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Education, Criminal Justice, Counseling or closely related field or at least four (4) years of responsible closely related full time work experience.  The City may consider applicants not able to meet all requirements at a lower job classification. 

Additional Requirements:

  • Requires an acceptable background check.
  • Reqires a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Individuals in this job classification cannot be listed with any state's Department of Human Services/Child Protective Services as having a "founded" child abuse complaint.
  • Employees in this job classification are required to refrain from all use of controlled substances and are subject to controlled substance testing including random testing in accordance with City policies
