Information regarding the Holiday Assistance Program
The Newport News Department of Human Services 2013 Holiday Assistance Program will match-up families and individuals in need of holiday food and/or gifts with community groups and individuals who would like to share the spirit of the season. These community groups and individuals “sponsor” those in need by providing Thanksgiving and/or Christmas assistance of food and/or gifts.
In 2012 more than 100 sponsors helped make the holiday season brighter for more than 750 families, making up over 2600 individuals, including senior citizens and children. These families were all receiving assistance through the City of Newport News Department of Human Services. Sponsors included places of worship, schools, businesses, organizations and clubs, and individuals who wanted to give back to those in need.
How Do I Become a Holiday Program Sponsor?
It is now time to kick-off the 2013 Holiday Sponsorship Program. If you or your group would like to be a Holiday Sponsor, please download and complete the 2013 Holiday Assistance Program Application, then return by mail, or fax, or email at your earliest convenience.

Are There Any Special Sponsorship Needs?
Yes! We are in need of sponsors who are willing to provide holiday gifts for older youth, ages 13 and older. We have many families who have a combination of younger and older children in the same family. Unfortunately we sometimes are only able to provide the children under 12 years of age with gifts, leaving the older children without gifts for the holidays.
How Do I Apply for Holiday Assistance?
Families and individuals in need of assistance are referred for aid by a Newport News Department of Human Services staff person only. If you are in need of assistance please contact your Department of Human Services worker directly. Newport News Department of Human Services Main Customer Service can be reached at 757-926-6610.
The application process will begin in mid-late September, 2013.
How Do I Update My Contact Information?
It is important that we have your up-to-date contact information at all times. To report a change of address, call the Holiday Hotline at 757-926-6403. Speak clearly and leave your name, old address, new address, and a phone number where you can be reached. Address changes should also be reported separately to your D.H.S. worker.
