Adult Companion Provider Certification

 
Who is a Companion Provider?
 
Individuals interested in providing home based care to the elderly or disabled can apply to become certified as an independent vendor or companion provider for customers of the Newport News Department of Human Services. Companion providers are an important part of the team including social workers, nurses, and doctors assisting persons to remain at home with appropriate help to meet their needs. Customers are assisted with services that allow them to live safely, independently and with dignity at home.
 
What tasks does a Companion Provider perform?
 
Tasks performed depend upon the individual needs of the customer. Tasks may include housekeeping (vacuuming, dusting, cleaning bathrooms, floors, refridgerators), meal preparation, shopping, running errands, personal care and assistance, and companion services.
 
 
What process do I have to go through to become an approved agency provider?
 
  • Must make application
  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Shall identify criminal convictions and consent to a criminal record check
  • Shall not have been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor which jeopardizes the safety or care of a customer
  • Shall participate in interviews with the local department of human services
  • Shall provide employment references
  • Shall provide two personal non-related references
  • May be required to pass health screenings/tests
 
How are Providers paid?
 
Providers are paid by the Department of Human Services by submitting invoices on a monthly basis. The independent provider may work part-time or up to 40 hours per week.
