The City of Newport News offers internships aimed at creating opportunities for growth and development of college or college-bound students as well as others interested in local government, and to introduce them to public service careers. Internships may be available through a variety of City departments and career paths. Available opportunities and application instructions are detailed below.

Training and Evaluation

Orientation will be conducted at the beginning of the internship and the intern will be assigned a mentor. The intern and mentor will develop an action plan that meets the individual and department’s needs. A performance evaluation will be provided for the intern at the completion of the program.

Please note that some internships may require additional information to be submitted at the time of an interview, such as an official college transcript, a current copy of the candidate's driving record, approval from a student's academic adviser, or other relevant supporting document. In addition, some intern positions will require an acceptable background check.
