Unpaid Leave Summary
A summary of unpaid leaves of absences.
An unpaid leave of absence of up to six (6) months may be granted to regular, full-time employees when appropriate paid leave has been exhausted. There are two types of unpaid leaves of absence:
- An Unpaid Medical Leave of Absence may be granted for qualifying medical situations for the period of time medically necessary for treatment/recovery after all paid medical leave has been exhausted.
- An Unpaid Personal Leave of Absence may be granted for any compelling, valid reason, including educational purposes, after an employee has completed six months of employment. All paid personal leave and compensatory time must be exhausted before an employee can take an unpaid personal leave of absence.
An approved unpaid leave of absence allows an employee to continue participating in group insurance plans and bridge employment with the City. While every reasonable effort will be made to hold an employee's position open, an unpaid leave of absence does not guarantee that an employee will be reinstated, except as required by FMLA.
