Jury Duty and Paid Holidays Summary

A summary of employee benefits related to jury duty and paid holidays.

JURY DUTY AND CIVIL LEAVE
Regular, full-time employees who are required to perform jury duty or who are subpoenaed to serve as witnesses in a court case will receive regular compensation as though they had worked their normal schedule. Employees are required to submit any compensation received for jury duty or court appearances during their normal working hours, excluding compensation for mileage. Compensation should be submitted to the employee's departmental payroll clerk who will forward the check to the Finance Department.

PAID HOLIDAYS

The City provides 10 - 10.5 paid holidays a year to regular, full-time employees as follows:
  • New Year's Day (January 1)
  • Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Birthday (Third Monday in January)
  • George Washington's Birthday (Third Monday in February)
  • Memorial Day (Last Monday in May)
  • Independence Day (July 4)
  • Labor Day (First Monday in September)
  • Veteran's Day (November 11)
  • Thanksgiving Day (Fourth Thursday in November)
  • Friday following Thanksgiving Day
  • Half day on Christmas Eve (If Christmas Eve falls on a regular weekday)
  • Christmas Day (December 25)

Each full holiday is observed as an eight-hour day. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, the City recognizes the preceding Friday as the holiday. When the holiday falls on a Sunday, the City recognizes the following Monday as the holiday. In order to receive holiday pay, the employee must be in an active pay status on the working day before the holiday.

Employees assigned to work schedules which require holiday coverage are granted compensation in the form of eight (8) hours pay or equivalent time off with pay.
