Paid Personal Leave Summary
A summary of paid personal leave.
The City provides a generous program of both paid and unpaid leave, and employees are encouraged to use their leave to meet their personal and family needs. Supervisors will make every reasonable effort to grant requests for leave provided operational requirements can still be met.
Paid Personal Leave (PPL) is a combined leave intended to cover vacation, absences for personal business, and some leave for medical purposes. Regular, full-time employees earn PPL each month the employee is in an active pay status as follows:

PPL may be used as soon as it is accrued, and accumulation is unlimited during the fiscal year, July 1 - June 30. However, the maximum carryover from one fiscal year to the next is 640 hours (864 hours for 24-hour fire employees). At the end of the fiscal year, eligible employees have an opportunity to exchange PPL for certain other benefits, such as retirement credit. If an employee still has more than the maximum carryover allowed for PPL after exercising leave exchange options, up to 80 hours of PPL will automatically be transferred to the employee's PML balance. Remaining PPL in excess of the maximum carryover will then be forfeited.
Employees will receive more detailed information regarding leave exchange eligibility and exchange options after June 30 of each year. Upon termination or retirement, unused PPL will be paid to the employee provided the employee has worked for at least one (1) month.
