Newport News Fire Department Special Operations
The Newport News Fire Department recognizes the community’s need for emergency responses involving specialized operations and functions. The Fire Department supports the Special Operations Teams Program to provide specialized response and to be prepared for potential catastrophic events. These teams supply the department with specialized data, equipment and expertise during an emergency incident.
The Assistant Chief of Special Operations is responsible for the overall management of the Fire Department’s four Specialty Teams. Each of the teams has an officer assigned to serve as team coordinator to oversee daily operations and administrative duties. The department has established operational guidelines to ensure compliance with both federal regulatory standards and applicable consensus standards. These documents serve as the foundation to guide management decisions, greatly enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of special operations, reduce liability, and increase the safety and survivability of personnel.
