After successfully navigating through the selection process, the real work begins as applicants become Firefighter-Medic Recruits on a probationary status and attend the Recruit Training courses.
History has repeatedly shown that not every Recruit will make it through this rigorous, demanding, and lengthy training. To succeed requires tremendous amounts of self-determination, self-discipline, physical fitness, and the understanding and unyielding support of family and friends.
Recruits face mental and/or physical challenges every day. The most driven and most capable recruits will successfully emerge from this arduous training to take the Firefighter’s Oath and begin their professional Fire Service career as a brother or sister at a Newport News fire station. These rookie Firefighter-Medic Recruits will then begin to forge an incredibly rewarding and satisfying career in the world’s most noble profession.
Please, before taking on these multiple phases, tests, and challenges, take some time to honestly examine your life situation, your strengths and weaknesses, and your goals. Then ask yourself: Am I ready to make this commitment?
