The first step in becoming a candidate for a position as a Firefighter-Medic Recruit is to complete an official City of Newport News job application and submit it to the Department of Human Resources. Applications are located and should be submitted on the LINC web site:
This site is accessible 24-hours a day, 7-days a week, from any computer with an Internet connection. You will be able to create a password-protected application, attach it to a posted position and, once submitted, track it through the system.
Please note:
Before an application can be submitted for the Firefighter-Medic Recruit position, the job must be posted on the LINC web site. If the position of Firefighter/Medic Recruit is not posted, interested persons are advised to periodically monitor the site.
Also:
Once a candidate submits an on-line application, a notice will appear on the screen directing the applicant to make a telephone call to establish a Written Testing Process date and location assignment. In order to be an active participant in the selection process, candidates MUST register, take, and pass the tests.
Selection Process:
The procedure by which candidates participate in the selection process for a Firefighter-Medic Recruit position with the City is multi-phased:
- Written Testing Process
- On-going Background Investigation
- Physical Agility Test
- Interview
- Polygraph Examination
- Chief’s Interview (optional)
- Eligibility Pool
- Conditional Job Offer
Each of these phases is designed to identify those candidates who are best suited to meet the needs of the Fire Department at the time. NNFD will contact candidates who have been selected to advance to the next phase.
Candidates should expect the selection process to last approximately 4 months before conditional job offers.
Each selection process is a stand-alone process. Therefore, candidates interested in continuing to seek a Firefighter-Medic Recruit position with the City of Newport News must reapply during each open application period.
