Applicant Background Information Packet

The following documents are available for download and are required to be returned to the Newport News Fire Training Center by October 4, 2011 at 5:00 p.m.  Paper copies of these documents will also be available on the date of the written test.

Additionally, your background packet must include copies of the following:  your DMV record (certified copy), high school diploma or GED  (or college diploma or transcripts), if a Military Veteran your DD-214, and any fire or EMS certifications.

** Verification of the following vaccinations are required prior to hire: Mumps, Measles and Rubella (MMR), Varicella and the current season's flu shot.

 

FIREFIGHTER-MEDIC RECRUITMENT


Please note: Newport News Fire Department is comprised of dual-role personnel. As such, Firefighter-Medics rotate their emergency response duties between ambulance and fire apparatuses.

Due to their dual-role responsibilities, recruits hired will be required to successfully graduate from the physically demanding Tidewater Regional Fire Academy (TRFA) and the EMT - Intermediate program.

 

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR APPLICANTS

 

Fire/EMS related certifications are preferred but are not required.

Candidate must pass an initial written test and physical agility test.

Requires a comprehensive background check to include a local, state and federal criminal history check and sex offender registry check.

Requires satisfactory results from a medical evaluation and pre-employment substance abuse testing and is subject to random controlled substance testing.


Candidate Qualifications

To be considered for selection as a Firefighter-Medic Recruit for the City of Newport News, each candidate:

  • must be at least 18, but less than 63 years of age;
  • must be a high school graduate or equivalent;
  • must have a point balance of -3 or better (or equivalent, if a non-Virginia resident) on their Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) record;
  • must be a US citizen or legally eligible to be employed in the US;
  • must agree to sign a No Tobacco Use agreement, which prevents an individual from using any tobacco products at any time, on or off the job, while employed by the City.
     
  • must not be a current illegal drug user OR have ever illegally possessed in the past three (3) years any drug or controlled substance which would constitute a felony; 
  • must not have bought with the intent to distribute or sold illegal drugs and controlled substance;
  • must  not have possessed marijuana within two (2) years of application for this position;
  • must not have been convicted of any crime preventing them from legally working with emergency medical supplies or apparatuses;
  • must not fail to keep scheduled appointments required as part of the application process;
  • must not have been convicted of a DUI/DWI within the past five years or Driving Under Suspension/Revocation within the past 5 years;
  •  must not have been convicted of more than 1 DUI in their lifetime;
  • must not  possess any conviction under the Office of Emergency Medical Services disqualifiers;
  • must not falsify or misrepresent any responses either orally or in writing to any questions posed to them in the applications process;
  • must not have an immediate family member at the rank of Assistant Chief or above working for the Newport News Fire Department (NNFD).
