Street Light Pilot Project Update
A project for LED streetlights
This is an update on LED streetlight Pilot Project that the City is currently carrying out in conjunction with Dominion Virginia Power. Ten (10) LED streetlights were installed on Beech Drive between Main Street and Hemlock Road in September, 2009. With the analysis of the data collected in two field surveys after the installation, we have found a significant improvement in lighting quality and operational performance. With the initial investment of approximately $5,000, the monthly maintenance cost has gone down by 85%. The power usage has been reduced by approximately fifty-six (56%) percent of total use by replaced mercury vapor lights. This also means a significant reduction in maintenance cost as well as the carbon emission. Referring to the improved brightness and lighting uniformity, many citizens have expressed their approval of these LED lights as they feel safe and comfortable while walking around or driving through the project area.
This test will complete on or before July 21, 2011 to provide for a longer review time for the City and the end users. Engineering is still seeking feedback from citizens and drivers regarding the new LED lights via email to Engineering or phone at (757) 926-8611.
As a result of this and other similar projects that Dominion is deploying in other localities, Dominion is going to offer LED as a standard product. A league of local governments in Virginia is negotiating with Dominion to develop its rate schedule. Within our City, we are proceeding with two street lighting projects that will employ LED fixtures as a lighting source; Jefferson Avenue and Harpersville Road, and the City maintained ornamental streetlights in the Downtown, Hilton Village, and Port Warwick.
