RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Implementation of design, construction, contractual award, construction inspection, project management and monitoring of public projects;
- Administration of the City review and approval process of private development, ensuring compliance with Newport News City Code; provisions, ordinances and the comprehensive plan, as well as approved Design Criteria and Standard Specifications manuals;
- Administration of the City Asbestos/Lead/Indoor Environmental Assessment Management Programs and Architectural Inspection of new construction and renovation of City facilities;
- Management of the City Geographic Information System (GIS);
- Maintain an internet site to display departmental services, points of contact and geographic information for public access;
- Analysis and implementation of traffic-related improvements, transportation planning and roadway projects in coordination with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and Hampton Roads Planning District Commission (HRPDC);
- Engineering services related to the City Stormwater Management (SWM) Program, complying with federal, state and local mandates;
- Technical support for environmental initiatives including the City's Lake Enhancement and Flood Assistance programs;
- Serves as the staff liaison on the City's Wetland Board;
- Engineering services associated with the City Sewage Collection System Management Program (SECOMP);
- Maintain the department's Environmental Management System (EMS) Program;
- Engineering studies affecting the safety, health and welfare of citizens and visitors;
- Administration of the City traffic programs, including traffic signs, traffic signals, pavement markings and streetlights; and
- Administration of City initiatives to bring compliance in the City right-of-way with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
