The City of Newport News has transitioned from emergency operations to standard operations. Storm related activities continue to remain a high priority as the City continues ongoing hurricane recovery.

Citizens are urged to call service providers directly.
• For power outages call: Dominion Virginia Power 1-866-DOM-HELP or 1-866-366-4357.
• For storm debris/trash pick-up: Newport News Public Works (757) 269-2700.
• For open/closed parks and recreation facilities: Newport News Parks, Recreation & Tourism (757) 926-1400 or (757) 888-3333.
• For non-emergency police-related issues, call (757) 247-2500. DO NOT call 911 unless it is an emergency. 

City Buildings/Facilities
City offices are open for normal business hours. However, there are several parks and recreational facilities still closed. An updated list of closures can be found online at www.nngov.com/parks-and-recreation/weather.

Water
Water provided by Newport News Waterworks is safe for use.

Trash collection
Regular trash collection, using curbside automated carts, is being collected on regular schedules.

Storm Debris/Compost Facility
Beginning Thursday, September 1, 2011 the City of Newport News will begin collecting Hurricane Irene storm related debris.

Well in advance of hurricane season, the Department of Public Works secured special contracts to allow large scale debris removal operations. Initial assessments of the area are concluding and as a result of the high volume of debris generated by Hurricane Irene, contractors are preparing to launch this large scale operation.

• Residents are asked to place brush and woody waste apart from bulk items (such as furniture, other household items).

• All debris will need to be at least three feet away from vehicles, utility poles, mail boxes, fences and other obstructions.

• Please ensure that your storm debris is placed in a way that does not block trash and recycling cans on your scheduled collection day.

• Storm debris removal operations will occur seven (7) days a week until completed.

• Do not place debris under low hanging overhead lines.

• Every other week bulk collections have been briefly suspended in order to support storm debris removal.

NEW storm debris disposal site the for residents of Newport News
The Waste Management Bethel Landfill, located at 100 North Park Lane in Hampton is accepting storm debris from the residents of Newport News. Residents must have a valid I.D. with them, in order to use this facility. Operating hours are Monday thru Friday, 7:00AM – 4:00PM and Saturday 7:00AM – 1:00PM. Bethel Landfill will be closed to the public on Labor Day, Monday, September 5, 2011.

Compost Facility open on Monday, September 5, 2011 - Labor Day
In order to accommodate the needs of the residents of Newport News, the Compost facility will be open on Labor Day, Monday, September 5, 2011. Compost facility hours of operation have been extended to Monday – Saturday, 6:00AM – 7:00PM, until further notice.

Hurricane Irene was a severe storm creating a large volume of debris throughout the entire city. Every effort is being made to pick up debris as quickly and safely as possible. We ask your patience as we move forward with the debris removal plan.

Citizen Health and Home Safety
In the case of electrical outage, it is important to take careful precaution to ensure food safety. The risk of food poisoning is heightened when refrigerators and ovens are inoperable. "When in doubt, throw it out." For information on food safety, visit the Virginia Department of Health.
