Medical Needs Program
Find out about the Newport News Medical Special Needs Program.
The City of Newport News Medical Needs Program is for citizens who are differently abled or have medical conditions limiting their ability to evacuate or seek shelter during an emergency. This voluntary, confidential program provides emergency response personnel such as Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Teams with the applicants specific needs so first responders can better serve you when responding to an emergency in your home or community.
Please note that there will be no special facilities at the public shelters, this includes beds, supplies, medical care or emergency back-up power for use in the event commercial power is disrupted. Individuals must be totally self-sufficient or have a personal/family caregiver with them who can provide for all of their needs. If you are under the care of a home health organization, it is important that you coordinate emergency plans with them.
The registration process is done on a regional level through the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission. This is a new registration process that began in 2011. Anyone who has registered in the past must renew their registration through the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission. To register, please click here.
If you need assistance with the registration process, please contact the Newport News Division of Emergency Management at 269-2900.
