Special Needs Program

Find out about the Newport News Special Needs Program.

The City of Newport News Special Needs Program is for citizens with disabilities or other medical conditions limiting their ability to evacuate or seek shelter during an emergency. This voluntary, confidential program provides emergency response personnel such as Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Teams with the applicants specific special needs so first responders can better serve you when responding to an emergency in your home or community.

Please note that there will be no special facilities at the public shelters, this includes beds, supplies, medical care or emergency back-up power for use in the event commercial power is disrupted. Individuals must be totally self-sufficient or have a personal/family caregiver with them who can provide for all of their needs. If you are under the care of a home health organization, it is important that you coordinate emergency plans with them.
