Community Right to Know Act

Information on the Emergency Planning Community Right to Know Act

On October 17, 1986, the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986, also known as SARA, was signed into law. An important section in SARA is the Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act (EPCRA), also known as SARA Title III. Prior to this law, citizens had little or no legal backing in their attempts to obtain information about toxic release in their own community.

Newport News is a member of the Peninsula Local Emergency Planning Committee (PLEPC), a regional group that coordinates SARA Title III activities for Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, Williamsburg, James City County and York County to meet EPCRA requirements.
