The City of Newport News is one of more than 18,000 communities nationwide that participates in the National Flood Insurance Program. Newport News citizens are strongly encouraged to buy flood insurance regardless of whether or not they live in a flood plain or high risk area. The average homeowners or renters insurance program does not include protection from flooding and water damage caused by severe weather conditions.
