Façade Improvement Program

The Newport News Façade Improvement Program.

The Newport News Façade Improvement Assistance Program will lend up to $30,000 and grant up to $5,000 to finance eligible exterior improvements on retail, commercial and mixed-use properties located along main business corridors in Newport News. The actual loan amount is determined (subject to the availability of funds, and the approval of the Newport News Redevelopment and Housing Authority Board).

Façade improvement grants can finance up to one-half of the cost of signage, awnings, canopies, shutters, lighting, doors and windows. Loans may be used to finance brick tucking, sandblasting, siding, roof improvements, painting and handicap modifications/ramps, as well as those items that can be funded by grants.

The Fund makes fixed interest loans at a minimum interest rate of 3%. Loans must be secured. No loan or grant can be made for properties with existing building code violations. Proposed improvements must conform to the design criteria established within a corridor, where applicable.
