At the heart of the Peninsula’s premier business community, Oyster Point Business Park, you’ll find City Center, a high density mixed use development that is changing long-held perceptions about Newport News. City Center has been developed by partnering with private investors and developers to create a new urban “sense of place,” where people want to live, work and have a good time. On any given day within its 52-acres, folks at City Center are doing the things that make a vibrant urban center alive with activity:
- Enjoying stylish living (365 apartments, 54 condominiums so far…)
- Staying the night in luxury at the 256-room Marriott Hotel
- Attending seminars and conferencing within 70,000 square feet of meeting space in the Marriott Conference Center
- Shopping in high-end retail or taking in a variety of fare from any of ten eating establishments found within 140,000 square feet of retail space
- Enjoying entertainment courtesy of the joint efforts of the Virginia Arts Festival, the City’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism and the Department of Development.
- Conducting business in nearly a half million square feet of office space
- Taking leisure time in the park setting that surrounds the 3-acre fountain lake
For City Center, the strength of the public/private partnering comes from teamwork along with clear leadership roles and responsibilities:
- Private financial backing – approximately $250 million to date by private development partners
- Commercial and retail development expertise and execution-- NAI Harvey Lindsay
- Land use and architectural expertise -- CMSS Architects
- Parking garage ownership and maintenance; public infrastructure master planning, financing and construction; Conference Center ownership – approximately $90 million investment to date by the City of Newport News and the City’s Economic Development Authority.
- Event Planning – Virginia Arts Festival City of Newport News
